7 Tips for Making Your Swimwear Last Longer
High-quality swimwear is more than just a purchase, it’s an investment. A high-quality bikini or swimsuit made from premium fabrics should see you through holiday after holiday, without losing its shape or style.
At Isabelle Meira, we create capsule collections combine refined styles with lasting quality - expertly crafted in Bali from luxurious fabrics. Our customers often tell us how much longer our swimwear lasts compared to others, so we’re sharing our top tips to help yours stay looking newer for longer.
1. Rinse Immediately After Use
Salt, chlorine, sunscreen and sweat have the ability to degrade swimwear fabrics. As soon as you’re done for the day, rinse your bikini or swimsuit in cool, clean water. This helps prevent fading and the fibre breaking down.
2. Hand Wash with Gentle Detergent
Your washing machine might be convenient but it’s not good for your swimwear. Hand wash your suit in cool water using a gentle detergent (only if needed) made for delicates or a splash of baby shampoo. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners as they break down elastic fibres.
3. Never Wring It Out
Twisting or wringing your swimwear to get the water out stretches it out of shape. Instead, gently press the water out using a clean towel, then lay it flat to dry.
4. Avoid the Dryer (and the Sun)
Heat is one of the fastest ways to ruin your suit. Skip the dryer and never leave it baking in the sun. Air-dry your swimwear in the shade on a flat surface to preserve elasticity and colour.
5. Rotate Your Swimsuits
Just like you wouldn’t wear the same pair of shoes every day, it’s a good idea to rotate your swimwear. Give each suit a rest day in between wears to let the fabric recover its shape.
6. Watch Where You Sit
Rough surfaces, such as pool edges, rocks and wood can cause snags or pilling. Always sit on a towel or cover-up to protect the fabric.
7. Store It Properly
When the season ends, make sure your swimwear is clean and completely dry before storing. Keep it in a breathable bag or drawer, not in plastic, to prevent mildew and maintain freshness.
Taking care of your swimwear extends its useful life, which means that you need to buy fewer items over time. Not only is that good for your wardrobe size, but it's also good for the planet.
